Recent Thrifty Puchases

I spend most Sunday's browsing car boot sales, I check out the charity shops at least once a week and I try as much as possible to peruse flea markets and street markets.

As a result, our house is filling up nicely with quirky pieces, I'm finding many items to upcycle and gift to friends and family, and after summer I shall be launching into a new business venture concerning all things Thrifty. Watch this space....

Some of my recent purchases include:

Pretty plates - £2

Picnic hamper - £5

Old map - £1.50
Gorgeous lace doilies - £4 for 12
Adidas bag - £1
Selection of glassware - £1.80
Wooden cutlery tray - £1

Thrifty Weekend

June, for me, is the start of the pre Summer holiday saving. With this in mind, cheap activites are a must. But it's always good to vary days out.

London's Time Out is a fantastic site for ideas of free places to visit and sights to see. The Thrift-Queen's top picks for this weekend in the capital include:

Naked Bike Ride
  • London's World Naked Bike Ride - a liberating nine mile cycle past major London landmarks taking place on Saturday 9th June and it's FREE to watch.
  • Open Garden Squares - This weekend 200 private gardens are opened for the public to snoop around. With gardens such as Downing Street and HMP Wormwood Scrubs on the list, the £9 ticket price sounds like an absolute snip.
  • London Green Fair - Regent's Park opens it's gates to the largest FREE eco fair with exhibitions, music, and fabulous family areas.
  • Or why not attend one of the many FREE performances of the Spitalfields Summer Music Festival starting this Friday (8th June).

Freebies: Free Hugo Boss 3D Glasses

Let's face it, we all love free stuff. It gives you that wonderous feeling of getting an utter bargain, even if you don't really want the item in question in the first place.

I quite often encounter free give-aways, so figure why not make them available to my lovely Thrift-Queen readers. Today, for example, I stumbled across a pair of FREE limited edition Hugo Boss 3D glasses. Handy, if that's what floats your boat.

I have already ordered some, because you never know. Just Click Here to fill in your details on their page. Available as long as stocks last.

Thrifty vs Cheap

Ok, ok. I love to boast about my thrifty bargains. Recently, I have been making some bargain buys for our new home including Laura Ashley wallpaper on eBay and a gorgeous antique school desk for my son. Also, I bought a stunning vintage map of Surrey from a charity shop for £1.50 (see photo); and my sister-in-law, for Christmas received from me two beautiful vintage tins, which I haggled heroically on the price of, in an antique shop in Matlock.

However, on seeing 7p Smart Price Valentine's card for sale in Asda, I couldn't help pondering the difference between a thrifty find and being plain cheap. There is defiantly a fine line between the two.

Ultimately, thrifty is cool. Cheap is not.

Just a quick Thrift-Queen recommendation: Hot UK Deals is an amazing community website which searches the best money saving deals to be had. They find and share the best deals, promotional codes, special offers and vouchers from on and off the web. A perfect site to visit before embarking on Christmas shopping. Go on, get yourself a bargain.

My favourites deals at the moment?
  1. Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard. £7.99 at Staples.
  2. Muddy Fox Hustle Mountain Bike. £25 in store at Tesco.
  3. Binatone F350 UK SatNav (with full 12 month warranty). £27.98 at Argos.
It is no secret that I love a bargain, but I love a freebie more. I am happy to report there is even a section for this! Other great deatures include competitions and deals in your local area.

Thrifty Winter Warmers

Asda are now selling their own brand slow cookers for a mere £9. An absolute snip, and a must for any bargain hunting, time-conscious cooks. Imagine coming home from a long day at work, to a tasty, nutritious and hot home cooked meal. Sound good? Then invest you should.

Slow cookers use only the electricity of a light bulb and their moist-heat system make it perfect for cooking all your favourite winter warmers including, soups; stews; casseroles and curries.

Judith Finlayson, author of The 150 Best Slow Cooker Recipes and Delicious & Dependable Slow Cooker Recipes claims slow cookers really can save you money. "The slow cooker is the perfect appliance for a recession. It performs best with the less expensive cuts of meat and does a fabulous job with inexpensive staples such a root vegetables, lentils and beans. So people can cut back on their food budgets, while producing delicious, nutritious food." Sounds like a winner to me, thriftful living and value for money at it's best.

Thrift-Queen's eBay Buying Tricks and Tips

I'm not going to lie. I  eBay. I use it to buy all sorts of goodies from clothes and toys, to furniture and accessories. But knowing where and how to look can be mind-boggling. So I thought I'd share with you my tips and tricks to achieving eBay buying success.

Where To Search

A must for anyone looking for a specific item, is to remember not everyone can spell! Spelling mistakes are rife on eBay. If you're looking for the perfect wedding dress, for example, try searching instead for a 'weeding dress', or let Fatfingers.com do the work for you. They search eBay for hidden treasures that would otherwise end up no bids, as nobody can find them!

Another top tip that I often use, is to remove the word 'and'. A higher itemised result can be found if you were to search for 'Lyle Scott' as opposed to 'Lyle and Scott'.

How to Search

My ultimate top tip in searching for anything on eBay, albeit a generic 'antique furniture' search or a more specific 'Harry Potter Lego' search is to personalise the search. There are many tools for you to do this and sniff out a bargain. The three that I have the most proven success rate with are:
  • Dictate to eBay how you want the results to be arranged using the 'Sort By' drop down list. The options include 'Ending Soonest' and 'Price: Lowest First' but I always opt for 'Nearest First'. This option will ultimately save you money as you'll be able to collect the item as opposed to paying for postage or shipping by couriers. It's not uncommon for eBay sellers to up-quote the cost of postage and packaging to make a bit more money for themselves.
  • Narrow down your search by searching in a chosen category - this option is particularly useful if you know what you are searching for. Choose from a drop down menu along the top of the search results page. But be aware that items often cross over into different categories. When this does happen, eBay lists (on the left side of the page) the actual categories where the search items were found.
  • Set a price limit. The light yellow column on the left-hand-side allows you to choose the amount you are willing to spend in the form of two boxes. In the first box you enter in the lowest price and the second, the highest price you want to pay for an item. Such as £0.01p - £28.77p. A much more purse friendly way to search. Some websites might recommend u looking at forums, for the average price varying items should be sold for, but I say just go with your gut.

How to Bid

Congratulations! You made it this far.

There are various tricks of the trade to eBay bidding. I would advise, if you're buying more than one item from the same seller, to contact them and ask if they offer combined postage (if you're unable to collect, as previously mentioned). Sometimes sellers might have a 'Best Offer' option whereby instead of straight bidding, you are able to offer them a price which you are willing to pay. The advantage of this is that you can see the previous offers that have been made by other buyers, to gauge how much to pay and provide the change to haggle.

My golden rule for bidding would be to wait until the last few minutes before entering your offer. Bidding too early will boost the price of your wanted item and you might thus miss out. When using this method, I tend to enter the highest possible amount I'd be willing to pay for the item, such as £43.77. Then I just hope that I am not outbid.

Unless paying cash on collection, I would always advise using 'Paypal' as they offer payment protection on items that are lost in the post.

Follow my simple guide and you too could enjoy eBay at its thrifty best! Need anymore advise? Drop me an email at thrift-queen@hotmail.co.uk and I'll be happy to help.

Groupon Greatness

Last weekend my big night out was to Ben 10 Monster Trucks with my five year old son. I bought tickets from Groupon at a bargain price of £8 each, a deal not to be sniffed at. The Thrift-Queen recommends Groupon, it was well worth every penny.

Car-Bootyness

I love a bargain, and thus am a HUGE fan of car boot sales. Yes, they're fantastic places to sell your unwanted junk, but I love them so much more for the potential of whiffing out a secondhand gem. However, even the most seasoned bargain hunter needs pointing in the right direction from time to time. And thus I would like to share with you the Time Out guide to London's best car boot sales http://www.timeout.com/london/feature/1193/londons-best-car-boot-sales . Their top five are:
    1. Wimbledon car boot sale. £2 for early birds, 50p there after.
    2. Battersea car boot sale. £3 for early birds, 50p there after.
    3. Capital car boot sale (Pimlico). £5 for early birds, £1 there after.
    4. Holloway car boot sale. Free.
    5. Hounslow West car boot sale. Free

The Thrift-Queen's top tips for buying at car boot sales are: haggle, haggle, and haggle. But more practically, bring lots of plastic bags to carry your new treasures in; arrive early and with lots of cash; and bring an umbrella and/or wellies depending on the weather.

Vintage Thrift

This photo is taken from a wedding I went to last year. I'm wearing a dress from Vivien Of Holloway, my favourite shop in London. They stock a range of fabulous style savvy clothes and accessories that'd transform anyone into a real vintage starlet.

Their beautiful dresses cost upwards of £59, depending on which style you are after. The red dress I'm wearing, for example, usually sells for £79. However, I bought my dress from the 'seconds' rail and it cost a mere £10. Thrift-Queen heaven! It had a small hole in the back of it, which is barely noticeable once I sewed it up. And I got myself an absolute bargain, saving £69! Highly recommendable for classic items of clothing that'll never go out of fashion. It is, however, worth a visit to the store to be measured as their sizes come up small.
